I called this section "Grow", and for good reason, it's what most business owners are here for.  To grow, profitably.


"A business that isn't growing is dying".  You'll have heard that quote many times before.  What you may have not heard before is; "A business growing too quickly may also be dying".  Unstable or unplanned growth kills more businesses than any recession ever will.

 

 "If you're making profit you're not growing fast enough".  Yes, I've heard the soundbite too. For the vast majority of small business owners that's un-realistic.  Profits are needed for Profitable Growth, it's essential for every business.


My business was hugely profitable and massively successful, yet unstable and unplanned growth were two of the fundamental mistakes I made that started that "Perfect Storm".


Most small business owners are making that same mistake right now and may not realise it (yet).  If it ain't broken, we can still fix it.

Business growth is exciting, let's not kid ourselves.  It's also what most business owners are here for.  You want to learn from my past mistakes and avoid them, and learn from my many successes and replicate them.  That sounds good to me, really good.


In the "Grow" module we move on from "Fix", so this module is not about the key numbers, systems, marketing and planning.  Of course they are vitally important, that's why we did them first.


When it comes to business growth, it’s easy to get swept up in the “bigger is better” hype. More customers! More staff! More locations! MORE, MORE, MORE! 


But here’s the thing; uncontrolled growth can be the very thing that kills a small business. That's exactly that happened to me, but the success of the business masked those damn mistakes I was now making, all in the pursuit of growth !!


What you need is profitable, planned growth,  growth that doesn’t just inflate your workload or ego, but actually fattens your bank account, strengthens your systems, and builds a business that doesn’t rely solely on your blood, sweat, and panic attacks.

Sometimes, the bravest thing a small business owner can do is choose stability and profitability over relentless expansion. But if growth is your goal, let's do it smart. Do it deliberately. Do it with intention. Build something sustainable, profitable, and joyful.

Not just big, but brilliant.  That's what I did, and did it well, then I forgot about the basics.

What makes you stand head and shoulders above the competition? What leaves your competition wondering what happened, and your customers thankful it did? What’s yours?


The biggest part of “Grow” is your customers, yet “Grow” isn’t about more, more, more. It’s about better, better, better. Profitable growth is rarely about turnover; it’s about finding the right niche markets and the customers that value your product or service. 


People that buy on price don’t just devalue your balance sheet; they devalue your entire business. Think about that!!
